Observing recent changes and dynamics that manifest in our economic systems, one may start questioning some of the fundamental truths that have coined our way of doing business for a long period of time. While the unprecedented events that shaped recent years have been unfolding across the world, the more subtle, underlying and not-as-obvious changes are those that will shape the years to come.
Have you noticed that we as consumers seem to behave differently and frankly, sometimes quite oddly? That is, our expectations towards companies have quite drastically changed. We expect fully personalized, customized products and services that are at the same time sustainable, affordable, available on any channel and delivered, free of charge of course, to our doorstep within 24 hours.
Furthermore, we expect complete transparency from firms while we demand our data to be handled to full confidentiality even though such data is necessary to 'produce' the customized goods we so passionately long for. Yet we willingly share our most private moments with millions of people around the world instantly, from anywhere on the planet?
Often, we are more interested in how others perceive the world around us than evaluating our own perception of the world. Who influences the influencer and what are the motives for doing so? Have you noticed that it is the entertainment that brands create and the excitement they induce that magically makes us buy their product, and not so much the product itself?
Have you noticed that companies are more and more challenged by an ever-changing competitive landscape since todays' competition can hail from anywhere, both geographically as well as from sectors foreign to your own? Have you noticed that while companies must produce 'insane' amounts of profit for their shareholders from daily operations, changes in the competitive landscape drive innovation in virtually all sectors fueled by the widespread adoption of 'emerging' technologies (such as AI, blockchain, platform ecosystems)?
It seems increasingly difficult for firms and consumers alike to navigate the challenges that such an ever-increasingly complex environment holds. In such environments, it may seem reasonable to draw our attention to the honing and mastery of capabilities and competences that enable us as consumers, firms, brands and, simply, people, to navigate in a business world that is full of surprises; where uncertainty is the prevailing environmental characteristic and opportunity can be
found everywhere; where our future skills will be vastly different from those we have developed and nurtured in recent years.
We therefore focus our research attention on the dynamics underlying the current and future changes shaping the Digital Economy for the various sides of the market. That is, we aim to produce cutting-edge research on
